Margaret's Ducks

Meet Margaret...a beautiful sweet girl watching the ducks at one of my favorite places, Lake Martin!  Her Daddy took a great photo for my reference.

Meet our grandson, Davis.  It looks like he enjoys painting as much as his Mimi does (though I try not to paint my hair!)

Commitment

Thirty years ago I made this christening gown for our son, David.  Now our grandchildren are wearing it.  With each young life that we dedicate to our Lord, I embroider the child's initials into the hem of the petticoat.  This painting holds memories of many happy family celebrations.

Oso

You may remember Oso from my posting this summer.  He is the surfing dog from Lake Martin.  My painting of him was chosen for the cover of Lake Martin Living this month.  He won first place in their art contest and received the People's Choice Award while on exhibit at Gallery 128 in Alexander City!

Peggi's Teapot

"Define Value first.  Then, push expressive color"...Peggi Kroll Roberts

While a departure from my usual style, this was such a fun painting.  The process involved an exercise in value, bold color, and brushstrokes loaded with paint, lessons learned at the Sarah Carlisle Towery (SCT) Art Colony workshop last week at Children's Harbor on beautiful Lake Martin.

The SCT Art Colony was created 20 years ago, honoring Ms. Sarah, a lovely lady who had a dream to provide a peaceful setting as a retreat away from our hectic lives, where artists could gather with minimal distractions to focus on their art.  We appreciate her visions and those of her daughter, Sarah, as well as the efforts of so many others who donate their time and energy to keep this vital group thriving.

What made the workshop great?  The total experience:  being able to study with Peggi Kroll Roberts, and to gain encouragement and inspiration from my talented classmates.  During the daytimes, we worked hard in the studio.  Nightly, we enjoyed our down time by sharing our perspectives with fellow artists while viewing the moonlit lake from our cabin porches.

After the first four days of really hard work and keen concentration, we spent the fifth day in casual conversation.  Peggi shared her stories and thoughts on her art journey.  Her information prompted many questions from us.

What a wonderful workshop!

The sunlight draws you to this quiet corner in the lobby of the Melbourne Hotel.

All Alone

There were no still waters like this to be found on the lake last week.  It was full of boaters and swimmers celebrating the fourth of July.  This morning the lake is peaceful and calm again.  Perfect for a canoe outing.

Balinese Art Lesson

A rare treat...I've recently returned from a wonderful trip to Indonesia and Australia with my brother.  We saw and heard so many different sights, cultures, and languages.  I never thought I would make it to the other side of the world!  This artist in Bali offered art lessons one afternoon on the banjar.  His son and I were his diligent students.  Balinese art is all about flora and fauna...lots of detail.

Ross Chemical Engineering Building, Auburn University

This stately building is located between Samford Hall and the old Student Union building on campus at Auburn University. It has a lovely brick patio and reflecting pool in front. Many students have contemplated knowledge (and romance) on these benches. It holds special memories for my niece and her husband who got engaged here 20 years ago. Happy Anniversary, Amy and Stan!

State Fair Winners

Blue Ribbon winners at the Alabama State Fair!  Some of our mothers and grandmothers spent many hours in the kitchen preserving fruit and vegetables from their gardens...

For me personally, this painting is a winner, too, because it is one of four pieces of  mine that were recently selected by the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art.   My work will accompany the paintings of some very talented artists in their museum shop.  It's an honor and a privilege to be associated with these wonderful curators of art.

Lobsterfest

This painting is based on a photograph from a wonderful New England cruise taken with our good friends several years ago.  The fall leaves were beautiful in these quaint harbor towns.  This is Halifax, Nova Scotia.  I'm still painting lobster cages in my sleep!

Struttin' Tom

It is the season for hunting wild turkeys in Alabama.  Early risers would surely like to call one of these fellas in the woods.

The Rock

The Rock is a popular gathering place at Lake Martin.  Boats and swimmers, old and young, socialize here on summer weekends.  Often the brave take a leap from these rocks to the water below.

Old Glory

This 1975 Jeep was Paw-Paw's pride and joy.  It thrilled his grandchildren, and even though he is no longer with us to enjoy it, it is a special treat today for his great-grandchildren.

Gus is my friend Rachel's ten year old beloved Fox Terrier.  He looked very handsome in her wedding several years ago.

Toomer's Trees

Toomer's corner is still alive!

This area is a landmark of the Auburn experience.  As the sun lights up the trees at daybreak, Toomers corner will soon come to life as classes begin, shops and restaurants open for business.  We are all hoping that these beautiful trees will survive.

Prints and giclees of this painting are available.  Contact me at bkc681@charter.net for info.
