Painting Plein Air

We learned a lot at the Tallapoosa School of Art this week painting plein air with David Boyd. It was a treat to paint in Jim Scott's lovely gardens.  Many thanks to Dorothy and George Littleton for hosting us in this beautiful place!

We began by selecting a spot that spoke to us. I choose a stone archway framing the entrance to yet another delightful garden area. Then, drawing with markers I created a value study on grey sketch paper. This approach allows the artist to make decisions before painting on canvas.

The weather didn't allow me to finish, but I have enough info now to complete the painting in my studio.

Artist in Action

Please join me at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art next Thursday, October 15 from 12:00-2:00.
I will be painting a fall lake scene with pretty reflections of colorful trees.  A lovely three course luncheon with wine pairings will be served.  Reservations required.  See above for details and visit www.mmfa.org for menu selections.

This painting of Jim Scott's garden is available in the Museum Shop.

Jim's Garden

Recently I had the privilege of visiting Jim Scott's garden on the lake near Martin Dam.  We have seen it from the water many times through the years, and observed as he continues to add new intriguing garden spots.  It has been written about in many popular magazines, but I had not had the pleasure of seeing it on land until this spring.  It is indeed a magical place, and he is so gracious to share it as he does.

I loved this scene of a wooden bridge and garden gate with a curving stone path that beckons you on to the next lovely spot.  I will deliver Jim's Garden along with several other pieces and notecards to the Montgomery Museum Shop tomorrow.  It is a great place to shop for unique gifts and accessories.
