Tranquility

Sunset is a time of reflection and tranquility.  Each day we can see God's new creation of beauty and color.  This painting is for sale at The Flower Store in Auburn, Alabama.

For the first time color authority, Pantone Institute, announced not one, but two colors for the year 2016:  Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue.  (You'll be forgiven for calling them light pink and baby blue.)
Designers this year chose a palette that is peaceful and relaxing.  They can transport us to a happier sunnier place.  You will be seeing these colors in fabrics, interior design, and in my case...an oil painting of the end of day.

Red Rock Hills

The setting sun created a beautiful red glow on these mountains. Red Rock Hills is available at the Museum Shop at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art.  It is a wonderful place to purchase distinctive gift items created by exciting regional artisans. Their Cafe M offers a menu of fresh lunch options in a quaint cafe setting overlooking the lake and park.

Elsie

Elsie is big sister and beach buddy to Thatcher in my recent painting, Knee Deep. Panama City Beach is one of their favorite vacation destinations, though they are quite the travelers.
Elsie is a beautiful young lady, perhaps a future model??

Time to Learn

Roger Dale Brown, an internationally acclaimed artist from Franklin, Tennessee, conducted a landscape workshop in Tuscaloosa last week.  He was assisted by his wife, Beverly Ford Evans.  Ann Foster was our gracious hostess at her studio, Brushstrokes.  I was privileged to learn from him.  Many thanks, Roger and ladies, for making this an enlightening and pleasurable experience.

Roger feels that planning is paramount to having a successful painting.  Valuable tools in the process may include sketches, photographs, and plein air studies.  This collection of data helps an artist remember the scene.  Its lighting, temperature, overall impressions, and feelings enable the artist to return to the studio and create a larger piece.

One of our exercises was to paint a tree being careful to show the values of the various planes, i.e. ground surface, upright (trees), slanted (hills), and sky.  Our goal was to create shapes within the tree showing nuances of light.

We had these precious 4 legged classmates with us, as Roger and Beverly travel with their terriers.

Roger is an excellent teacher, showing us through demonstrations his painting thoughts and process. He emphasized the importance of adhering to acceptable design principles.  Most of all he encouraged setting goals and persistence, putting in time and effort necessary to succeed.  I left eager to incorporate new ideas into my style of painting.

Fishin' Hole

My friend captured this precious scene of her grandchildren on her I phone. They were enjoying the afternoon at a favorite fishing spot on their farm.   She might need to become a children's photographer!  Of course having precious subjects always helps.  She commissioned me to paint this painting for a Christmas gift for her son and his wife.

Tyler

.

Tyler brought lots of happiness to his family.  He offered so much love. The children of my friend surprised her with this 16 x 20 oil portrait of him.  I hope it brings back good memories.

As the new year approaches I wish you all a blessed holiday season full of special family times and gratitude for our Saviour's birth.

Just the Two of Us

Lake Martin offers so many beautiful scenes.  Early morning and late afternoon are our favorite times, when the sunlight works its magic.  In Just the Two of Us these red chairs offer the perfect spot for enjoying this peaceful panorama.  This painting is one of my pieces to be shown in a new business coming to our area.

I am happy to announce the opening of Red Hill Fine Art. a new art gallery in the Castaway area on the lake.  Its proprietor, Loren Mortarono, has returned bringing years of experience in the art world to this fun gallery offering fabulous art.  He plans to have art classes, food and wine tastings, as well as framing services. He aptly calls his gallery "A Sunny Place for Shady People".

Please stop by: 3284 Red Hill Rd., Tallassee, AL.

Knee Deep

Every year I look forward to spending a week at Children's Harbor on Lake Martin at the Sarah Carlisle Towery Art Colony.  It is such a privilege to spend time with artist friends from across the southeast, and paint without pressure in a beautiful setting.  It's like camp for adults.  We stay in lakefront cabins and  are able to concentrate on our painting with no distractions. Sitting on our porches watching the moonlight sparkle on the water at night, we share tips, techniques, and dreams.

Our wonderful teacher this year was Julee Hutchison from Telluride, Colorado.  Please check our her website at www.juleehutchison.com.   She is a beautiful artist.  She shared with us her love of nature which has led her to plein air painting.   We also painted still lifes and figures from live models.  We painted with palette knives and brushes, standing up and sitting down, inside and outside!  She challenged us to try new things.  It is always fun to see how fellow artists approach the same subject, with entirely different results.

I always come home energized and rejuvenated about my art...ready to try new approaches and subject matter.  We are indeed blessed to have this special time for friendship and learning.  Many thanks to the local volunteers and board members who give of their time and energy to take care of us!

I began this painting, Knee Deep, at art colony. Working from a photograph of this precious little boy, my challenge was to capture the temperature changes from warm to cool with the bright sunshine and reflections from the water.

Aspens

Beautiful fall colors surround us this time of the year.  They are just a reminder of  the many blessings of living in our bountiful nation.  I am thankful for so many blessings...my family, my home, safety, and a loving God who provides all things.  I want to especially thank you, my viewers, who support and encourage my art.  Happy Thanksgiving!

This painting will be featured in the Small Works Show opening Thursday night, Dec. 3 at Stonehenge Gallery in Montgomery.  I hope you can stop by before Christmas to see work from a collection of very talented artists.
