Tyler

.

Tyler brought lots of happiness to his family.  He offered so much love. The children of my friend surprised her with this 16 x 20 oil portrait of him.  I hope it brings back good memories.

As the new year approaches I wish you all a blessed holiday season full of special family times and gratitude for our Saviour's birth.

Just the Two of Us

Lake Martin offers so many beautiful scenes.  Early morning and late afternoon are our favorite times, when the sunlight works its magic.  In Just the Two of Us these red chairs offer the perfect spot for enjoying this peaceful panorama.  This painting is one of my pieces to be shown in a new business coming to our area.

I am happy to announce the opening of Red Hill Fine Art. a new art gallery in the Castaway area on the lake.  Its proprietor, Loren Mortarono, has returned bringing years of experience in the art world to this fun gallery offering fabulous art.  He plans to have art classes, food and wine tastings, as well as framing services. He aptly calls his gallery "A Sunny Place for Shady People".

Please stop by: 3284 Red Hill Rd., Tallassee, AL.

Knee Deep

Every year I look forward to spending a week at Children's Harbor on Lake Martin at the Sarah Carlisle Towery Art Colony.  It is such a privilege to spend time with artist friends from across the southeast, and paint without pressure in a beautiful setting.  It's like camp for adults.  We stay in lakefront cabins and  are able to concentrate on our painting with no distractions. Sitting on our porches watching the moonlight sparkle on the water at night, we share tips, techniques, and dreams.

Our wonderful teacher this year was Julee Hutchison from Telluride, Colorado.  Please check our her website at www.juleehutchison.com.   She is a beautiful artist.  She shared with us her love of nature which has led her to plein air painting.   We also painted still lifes and figures from live models.  We painted with palette knives and brushes, standing up and sitting down, inside and outside!  She challenged us to try new things.  It is always fun to see how fellow artists approach the same subject, with entirely different results.

I always come home energized and rejuvenated about my art...ready to try new approaches and subject matter.  We are indeed blessed to have this special time for friendship and learning.  Many thanks to the local volunteers and board members who give of their time and energy to take care of us!

I began this painting, Knee Deep, at art colony. Working from a photograph of this precious little boy, my challenge was to capture the temperature changes from warm to cool with the bright sunshine and reflections from the water.

Aspens

Beautiful fall colors surround us this time of the year.  They are just a reminder of  the many blessings of living in our bountiful nation.  I am thankful for so many blessings...my family, my home, safety, and a loving God who provides all things.  I want to especially thank you, my viewers, who support and encourage my art.  Happy Thanksgiving!

This painting will be featured in the Small Works Show opening Thursday night, Dec. 3 at Stonehenge Gallery in Montgomery.  I hope you can stop by before Christmas to see work from a collection of very talented artists.

Autumn on the Lake (from start to finish)

I enjoyed painting this demonstration for Cafe DiVine at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art this month.  They had a full house for their quarterly wine and food pairing luncheon.  I can see why, as the food and service were wonderful.  It was a treat to savor my lunch when I finished painting!

Julia

Miss Julia is my sweet granddaughter who lives in  Mississippi.  She is painted here on the porch of her home in the countryside near Oxford...a southern belle indeed.  She and her family are welcoming a new baby girl to their family later this week.  Best wishes to all!

Exotic

These beautiful flamingos live in a bird sanctuary in Singapore.  Flamingos embody the saying "you are what you eat." The pink and reddish colors of a flamingo's feathers come from eating pigments found in algae and invertebrates. The Jurong Bird Park where these birds reside is Asia's largest bird paradise.  It is a magical place where many species of birds live in natural habitats.

Exotic is available at Vignettes on Magnolia in Auburn, Alabama.  Please stop by to see their newly finished renovations and merchandise.

Big Red

Canoeing is a favorite activity on Lake Martin.  It is such a peaceful scenic way to enjoy the water. We like to sit on our front porch and watch families and children on their journeys.

It was fun to capture the reflection of this vintage canoe.  Big Red is available at The Flower Store in Auburn.

Cindy

.   Cindy was a beloved family pet who lived to be 17 years old.  I was commissioned to paint her for a Father's Day gift.  I hope her painting brings back happy memories.

Dock Party

Every summer we look forward to having our family come to visit on Lake Martin.  With the help of their parents, we took lots of photos for reference of this crew of grandchildren sitting on the dock. They have a great time together!
Of course this painting is not for sale, but I do welcome commissions.  Our grandchildren make beautiful subjects to capture sweet memories.

We certainly appreciate his support of the arts.  This summer exhibit will run until August 28.  I hope you will be able to visit!

Jim's Garden

Recently I had the privilege of visiting Jim Scott's garden on the lake near Martin Dam.  We have seen it from the water many times through the years, and observed as he continues to add new intriguing garden spots.  It has been written about in many popular magazines, but I had not had the pleasure of seeing it on land until this spring.  It is indeed a magical place, and he is so gracious to share it as he does.

I loved this scene of a wooden bridge and garden gate with a curving stone path that beckons you on to the next lovely spot.  I will deliver Jim's Garden along with several other pieces and notecards to the Montgomery Museum Shop tomorrow.  It is a great place to shop for unique gifts and accessories.

Summer Afternoon

I have recently returned from an exciting week with art friends at the Forgotten Coast Plein Air Event 2015.  It is held each year in the panhandle of Florida from Mexico Beach to Apalachicola.  There are so many picturesque vistas to paint, 30 invited artists to watch, and lots of fun activities...not to mention the great seafood!

I actually did more learning than painting, but wanted to share a beach scene I had time to paint one afternoon.  My goal was to focus on color, hoping to capture the beautiful light and shadow pattern of the dunes.

Almost There

I am excited to have Almost There juried into the 2015 Montgomery Museum of Fine Art Show!  Held every other year, this event is highly competitive.  97 artworks were selected out of 437 submitted.  The exhibit will be on display at the museum from June 12 to August 9.

Croft

This little fellow is the handsome grandson of a good friend.  His dad and my son were high school friends in Auburn and college roommates at Ole Miss.  Now they are husbands and fathers, raising sons of their own.

Sam

I dusted off my drawing skills this week to render baby Sam.  He is a cutie!   He will be framed with a linen mat and ornate gold frame to share a wall with previous drawings of his brother and sister.  I really enjoyed drawing again.  It is where most artists begin their learning journey and where we all need to return often to brush up on our skills.

Happy

I fell in love with this dog when I saw his photo.  Bo looks so happy and carefree that I named the painting "Happy".

This painting is available for purchase at the Energen Show at their corporate office downtown in Birmingham through March 21.  I hope you will make time to visit this wonderful collection of artwork featuring Alabama artists.

Cahaba Lilies

I am happy that this is one of two paintings accepted for the Energen Show which will run from March 9 through 20 at their headquarters downtown in Birmingham.  It is indeed an honor to participate along with many talented Alabama artists they have chosen this year.

The Cahaba Lilies are unique in this area on the Cahaba River in Alabama.  They bloom once a year in late May and early June in this beautiful habitat near Birmingham.  They require swift current and direct sunlight to flourish. Each flower blooms for one day.

Perhaps the best way to view them is by going down river in a canoe. One of the best populations is found in the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge.   They even have their own festival on the last Saturday in May in West Blockton.

Best Friends

This sweet Labrador Retriever was an only child until her new baby sister arrived.  From the looks of my photo references for this painting, this is the beginning of many fun times for this duo.

We enjoyed watching the Westminister Kennel Club Dog Show this week.  How I would love to paint those beauties!  Congratulations to Miss P, a 15" Beagle with lots of personality. Her owner said she would retire to become a Mom after winning this prestigious show.

Here is the collage of the paintings I created this month in Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days challenge.  As you can see I didn't quite make 30, but close enough!  The collage was made by uploading the photos to an online website named "picmonkey".  It's a fun tool to use.

Take a look and let me know which painting is your favorite.  Many thanks to Leslie
for the challenge.  It was a great way to get motivated in 2015.

Day #30

5 x 7 oil on linen canvas panel

This painting is a special vacation memory.  These are my fabulous art friends on holiday in Sorrento on a wet rainy day. I was drawn to their colorful umbrellas and the reflections on the slick city streets. Good times...

Thank you faithful friends for following me on my challenge this month! Day #30 of 30!  Yeah!

It has truly been a rewarding experience for me. I am  excited to welcome some new followers due to this social networking I am trying to master.  It comes so easy to our young folks, but can be a challenge for my generation.

Tomorrow I will be posting a collage of the paintings I have created this month.  Then I will be giving you a break from daily emails, as I return to posting several paintings a month.

Day #29

5 x 7 oil on linen canvas panel   Sold

These beautiful birds are a welcome spot of color in the wintertime.  I enjoy watching them come to feed near our screened porch at Lake Martin.

I have always loved these birds.  When I was growing up my aunt and I made felt redbirds for our Christmas trees.  She was a master quilter, as well, and I was fascinated with her selection of fabrics and patterns.

If interested in purchasing, please email me at bkc681@charter.net

Day #28

                                                  16 x 20 oil on canvas

This is a spot for good times on Lake Martin.  Some think of it as Chimney Rock, though it is actually Acapulco Rock, so named because the brave jump off of it for thrills and excitement!  On most summer weekends a crowd gathers to socialize and watching the daring.

I missed posting one day this week because this painting took several days to complete.  I painted an underpainting first to establish my values.  It will be part of a new show beginning February 12 at Stonehenge Gallery in Montgomery titled Alabama; Picture Perfect.  For more information go to www.stonehengeinc.com.

Day #27

                                                   5 x 7 oil on linen panel

I wanted to paint one more painting of the beautiful aspens.  This time I used a different color palette. Their coloration varies so much at different times of the day and on an overcast day versus one with sunshine.

Day #26

                                               5 x 7 oil on linen panel

This is the sixth painting in my boat series.  I loved the shape of this boat and the pop of red on the bow.  If interested in purchasing, please email me at bkc681@charter.net.

Day #24

5 x 7 oil on linen canvas

This little bunny is spoken for.  She will go to her new home in Memphis in the nursery for a newborn baby girl named Angeline.  Sweet dreams...

Day #23

                                                 6 x 12 oil on canvas        Sold

A friend with a green thumb gave me some narcissus bulbs for Christmas.  I love watching these sweet smelling flowers grow and bloom in January.  They became the subjects for this painting challenge.  I used a black background to make the image pop.  It is almost becomes a  graphic design.

Day #22

                                                5 x 7 oil on linen panel

This the fifth painting in my boat series.  We love to watch the Dixie Yacht Club members sailing on Lake Martin.  If you want to purchase, please email me at bkc681@charter.net.

Day #21

                                                 5 x 7 oil on linen panel

This is painting is from a photograph a friend of mine took on her trip to Melbourne, Florida last spring.   I enjoy painting vacation memories.  I appreciate her allowing me to paint it!

Day #19

6 x 6 oil on linen canvas

I know it is a little late for the gourd season, but I loved the shape of this one.  Its curves created nice negative spaces in the composition design.  My husband named it "Curly".

Day #17

      5 x 7 oil on canvas panel

I like the juxtaposition of red and turquoise on this boat, also the reflection of the bumpers in the water.  This is the third painting in my boat series.

If you are interested in purchasing, please email me at bkc681@charter.net.

Day #15

5 x 7 oil on linen canvas panel      Sold

The colors of aspens in the fall have eternally drawn artists to paint them.  I was fortunate to visit Santa Fee last year with my sisters to see them.

Today is "hump" day, halfway through the challenge.  It is beginning to feel more natural to begin each day painting in my studio.  Thank you for staying with me on this journey, and especially for your encouraging remarks.

Don't forget to help me with naming.  I want to name all of my "children" before sending them off to new homes!  Please email me @ blc681@charter.net if interested in purchasing.

Day #13

17 x 20 framed, oil on linen canvas

These children are having fun at the end of the day running on the boardwalk on their spring vacation in Florida.  The challenge for this painting was to capture the orange glow of the setting sun.  This painting has been in progress for a while, so I am happy to finish it today.

Day #12

5 x 7 oil on linen canvas panel

Fun in the sunshine, experiencing the grit of the sand and coolness of the ocean....
